NBA’s Most Popular Players

June 6, 2013

As the Miami Heat face-off against the San Antonio Spurs tonight for the first game of the NBA Finals, the annual survey of the most popular NBA players has been released. Conducted by  E-Score®, a leading consumer research service that provides information to media and entertainment companies, the survey shows only one player from each of the Spurs and the Heat made the top-10 list.

The survey combined scores for “appeal” and “talent” to determine the overall most popular players for this past season. Notably missing from the top-10 list was Miami Heat’s LeBron James, who had high scores for talent but one of the lowest scores for appeal, which dragged him down to #27 (32 percent of respondents found him appealing, 55 percent talented).

Bieber Facing Non-Beliebers

April 15, 2013

Based on our research, the love affair between fans and Justin Beiber appears to be cooling. There’s increasing concern that Bieber’s recent behavior — egocentric messages about Anne Frank, canceling or appearing late at his concerts, battling with paparazzi, and just generally acting out — is impacting his relationship with fans and brands alike.

Even among his core fan-base; Women 13-21, an increasing number say they “Would Not Recommend” Beiber to friends and family. Also, Beiber’s E-Score, which is an overall measure of marketability, has plummeted in recent months and now stands at less than half of his previous high score.

Celebrity Endorsers in Super Bowl Ads 2013

February 1, 2013

Celebrities are a popular technique for advertisers looking to entertain, shock or otherwise cut through the noise of the most talked about advertising day of the year. As Super Bowl ads have become “Must See TV,” these brands have enlisted prominent athletes, models, action heroes, comedians and cultural icons to achieve their advertising objectives.           E-Score Celebrity has measured this year’s crop of big game endorsers along with the brands they are representing.

Although women are watching the game in numbers nearly equal to men (46% of last year’s audience was female according to published reports), male endorsers outnumber females almost two-to-one. Led by Sketchers and GoDaddy.com, these advertisers have collectively selected endorsers with male-skewing appeal.

A scan of the notable attributes for each endorser shows that humor and sex appeal remain popular themes, but some are dialing up celebrities who are considered “cute,” “approachable,” “interesting,” and “trend-setter” in an effort to capture the attention of this growing female audience.

Here are the E-Scores for the celebrity endorsers in this year’s Super Bowl advertising.

E-Poll polls the pollster

December 18, 2012

Author and blogger Nate Silver was one of the stars of the recent election cycle, cutting through media clutter with his “analysis of politics, polling, public affairs, sports, science and culture, largely through statistical means.”

But is his popularity just “inside baseball” for the media set, or does his reputation cross over to a more mainstream audience? We included Mr. Silver in our E-Score Celebrity survey to find out what America thinks.

By way of comparison, Silver’s awareness and attribute scores are similar to another noted author whose work deals with social science and the implications of research, Malcolm Gladwell.
